A determined climb

Military Hospital 175 in Ho Chi Minh City is a beacon of hope in the fight against stroke. Its neurology department has been quietly achieving remarkable feats, culminating in 2022 in their first WSO Angels diamond awards. They have gone on to win five consecutive diamond awards, testimony to their unwavering commitment to excellence.

The mission to improve their stroke care began in 2019 and coincided with the appointment of Dr Hoang Tien Tong Nghia as head of the neurology department at the age of 33. Under his forward-looking leadership the hospital was enrolled with the Angels Initiative and within a year won their first WSO Angels award.

Winning a gold award validated their efforts to streamline their stroke treatment processes, ensuring patients received timely care that met international standards. But the team didn’t stop there. They continued refining their skills and improving the quality of stroke treatment until in the third quarter of 2022, after six consecutive gold awards, their hard work was rewarded with a platinum award.

Their first diamond followed in the very next quarter – a prestigious distinction places them among the first Vietnamese medical facilities to achieve this honor. It’s a well-deserved recognition of their expertise and dedication that have helped save countless lives.

Military Hospital 175 was founded in 1975 by merging several military medical divisions and units. Known until 2003 as Liberation Army Hospital, it initially served veterans and military officers in the aftermath of the Vietnam War. It is now a leading general hospital in the South of Vietnam and an inspiration to other hospitals who want to improve their stroke care.

The formula for success

The stroke department’s success isn’t a stroke of luck. It’s the result of three key ingredients – relentless effort, innovative thinking, and powerful team spirit.

Unwavering dedication. Dr Nghia and his team are lifelong learners. They constantly update their knowledge with the latest advancements in stroke treatment and meticulously hone their skills. This ensures that patients receive the highest quality care possible.

Embracing innovation. The department stays at the forefront of stroke treatment by utilizing cutting-edge techniques and technologies. The hospital's investment in modern equipment allows them to perform vascular intervention, clot dissolution, and advanced post-stroke rehabilitation. This translates to improved treatment outcomes, reduced mortality rates, and fewer post-stroke complications.

United as one. The stroke department functions as a well-oiled machine. The doctors work together seamlessly, supporting each other and fostering a professional and efficient work environment.

The climb continues
